Statement of Faith
What We Believe
This Statement of Faith represents a brief synopsis of the fundamental beliefs of City Bible Church and is regarded as an authoritative rule governing every aspect of our programmes, activities, faith, doctrine, conduct and life. Therefore all programmes and activities shall at all times be consistent with this Statement of Faith.
THE SCRIPTURES: We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, written by holy men of old who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Therefore the Scriptures of the Old and the New Testament in their original writing are fully inspired and inerrant Word of God. These Scriptures, the sixty-six books of the Bible are infallible truth, containing no contradiction or error. We accept the Scriptures as the supreme and final authority for faith, doctrine, conduct and life. (2 Tim. 3:16,17; 1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Peter 1:20,21).
THE GODHEAD: We believe in one God, manifested and eternally existing in three Persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who are omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. (Deut. 6:4,5; Gen.1: 1,26; John 1:1-3; Isaiah 43:10,11; Mark 12:29,30).
GOD THE FATHER: We believe that God is a Spirit, uncreated, self-existent, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth. (Mal.2: 10; Acts 17:28; John 1:12,13; 8:41-44; 17:3; 20:17).
JESUS CHRIST: We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ and that He is the only mediator between God and man. We believe that Jesus existed with the Father from the beginning. We also believe that Jesus was begotten of the Father, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. He is the Word that became flesh and is true God and man. We also believe in the present day ministry of Jesus as our High priest, our Advocate, our Intercessor, our Shepherd, and the Head of the Church. We believe that all who repent of their sin and accept, believe, confess and receive Jesus into their life, by faith, as Lord and Saviour are justified on the grounds of His shed blood and are born again by the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God. (Acts 1:11; Acts 2: 32-36; 1 Cor. 15:3-8; 1 Thess. 4:16,17; Matt. 1:18-23; John 1:1,14,18; Lk 1:26,27; 1Cor. 15:3; 1 Tim. 2: 4-6; Heb. 4: 15,16; Heb. 8:6; 9: 11,12,24-26; John 16:7; 1John 1:9,10; 2:1,2; Heb. 7:25; Heb. 8:6; 1 Tim. 2:5; Col.1: 18; John 10:14; Eph. 4: 15; 5:23; 1 Pet. 2:23,24).
THE HOLY SPIRIT: We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, separate and distinct from God the Father and God the Son, and is the third person of the Holy Trinity. We also believe in the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, which is a gift from God as promised by the Lord Jesus Christ to all believers in this dispensation and is received subsequent to the new birth. This experience is accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Holy Spirit gives utterance. (Matt.3: 11; Jh. 14:16,17; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:38; Acts 19:1-7; Acts 2:1-4). We also believe in the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, and in the empowering and equipping work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. (1 Cor. 12: 4-11; Jh.14: 16, 26; Jh. 15:26; Jh. 16:7,8; Rom. 8:14; Acts 5:3,4; Matt. 3:16,17; 1 Cor. 2:10,11).
MAN, HIS FALL AND REDEMPTION: We believe that God created man good and upright, in His own likeness and image and through Adam and Eve’s transgression and fall, sin came into the world and thereby incurred the penalty of sin which is death, physically and spiritually. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. “There is none righteous, no, not one”. (Rom. 3: 10,23). All human beings therefore inherit a sinful nature, which issues in the case of those who reach moral responsibility in actual transgression involving personal guilt. (Gen. 1: 26-28; Eph. 2:1-3; 1 John 3:8-10; Isaiah 53:6; Rom. 3:9,10,22,23; 2 Cor. 4:4; 2 Cor. 5:17; Rom. 5:12; 2 Cor. 5:19) Jesus Christ, the Son of God was manifested to undo the works of the devil and gave His life and shed His blood to redeem and restore man back to God (Rom. 5:14; 1Jh. 3:8). Salvation is the gift of God to man, separate from works and the law, and is made operative by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, producing works acceptable to God. (Eph. 2:8-10).
SATAN: We believe that Satan is a fallen being, although originally created a good angel, rebelled against God with a third of the angels and was cast out of the presence of God. Jesus defeated Satan through His death, burial and resurrection. Every born again believer has been given authority over all the works of the devil. (Col. 1:12-14; Col. 2:13-15; Lk. 10:19; Eph. 4:27; 6:12-18; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8,9; Matthew 16:19; 18:18-20; Mark 16:15-18; Isa. 14:12-17; Rev.12: 9;Lk. 4:1-6; 2 Cor. 4:4; Eph. 2:2; 1Jh. 5:19; Jude 6; Rom. 6:14; Acts 10:38). At the end of the age, death and hades with Satan and all his demons, including all those who have rejected salvation through Jesus will be cast forever into the lake of fire. Rev. 19:20; 20:10-15; 21:7-8.
ETERNAL LIFE AND THE NEW BIRTH: We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross as the substitution sacrifice for the sins of the world according to the Scriptures, therefore all who accept, believe and receive Him are justified on the grounds of His shed blood. (John 3:16; Acts 4:12; Romans 10: 8-10,13; John 1:12 Eph. 2:8-10; Acts 2:38,39) Therefore man’s first step towards salvation is godly sorrow that worketh repentance. All who repent of their sins and receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God. The new birth is necessary to all men, and when experienced, produces eternal life. Through the new birth every believer has been delivered from the power of darkness and has been conveyed into the kingdom of God. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (Acts 2:38,39; Rom.3: 24-28; Eph. 2:8-10 (2 Cor. 7:10; Jh. 3:3-5; 1 Jh. 5:12).
THE RAPTURE AND THE RETURN OF OUR LORD: The angels said to Jesus’ disciples, “…this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” His coming is imminent. When He comes, “…the dead in Christ shall rise first, then they which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air…” (Acts 1:11; 1 Thess. 4:16,17). Following the tribulation, He shall return as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, and together with His saints, who shall be kings and priests, He shall reign a thousand years. (Rev.5: 10; 20:6).
THE RESURRECTION: We believe in the resurrection of both the just and the unjust, the eternal blessedness of the redeemed, and the eternal banishment of those who have rejected the offer of salvation through Christ. (John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15; Rev. 20:13).
HELL AND ETERNAL RETRIBUTION: The one who physically dies in his sins without accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour is hopelessly and eternally lost. When an unbeliever dies he / she is immediately consigned to hell, there to wait the day of judgement when he / she will be punished with eternal separation from the presence of God in the lake of fire and therefore has no further opportunity of hearing the Gospel or of repenting. The lake of fire is literal. The terms “eternal” and “everlasting” is used in describing the duration of punishment of the damned in the lake of fire, carry the same thought and meaning of endless existence as used in denoting the duration of joy and ecstasy of the saints in the Presence of God (Heb. 9:27; Rev. 19:20).
THE CHURCH: We believe that the one true Church is composed of all people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, those who have been redeemed by Jesus Christ and regenerated by the Holy Spirit. The local church on earth should take its character from this concept of the Church spiritual and therefore the new birth and personal confession of Christ are essential for church membership. (Rom. 12:4,5; 16:5; 1Cor .12:12-31; Eph. 2:19-22; 4:11-16; 1 Pet. 2:4,5; Rev.5: 9,10).
THE MINISTRY: We believe in the full function of the five-fold ministry; that of the Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, Teacher and Evangelist, which was given for the perfecting and equipping of the saints for their work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Corinthians 12:28).
ITINERANT MINISTRIES: We believe in the autonomy of each local church and that itinerant ministries should be based out of or be related to a local church with accountability. (Acts 13:1; Acts 15).
SUBMISSION TO AUTHORITY: With regards to submission to authority, we believe in the principle of being in authority because you are under authority. As such, it is understood that membership shall be subject to submission to authority in matters pertaining to church governance, doctrine and personal behaviour. (Heb.13:17; 2 Tim. 2:23-26).
DIVINE HEALING: Divine healing was provided for in the Old and in the New Testament. We believe that divine healing is for the physical ills of the human body and is wrought by the power of God through the prayer of faith, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and by the laying on of hands. It is provided for in the atonement of Jesus Christ and is an integral part of the gospel, and is the privilege of every member of the Church today (Isaiah 53:4-6; Gal. 3: 13,14; 1Pet. 2:24; Mk.16: 18; James 5:14-16; Matt.8: 17).
ORDINANCES: We believe that the Lord Jesus appointed only two ordinances namely: Water Baptism and Holy Communion, which is to be observed as acts of obedience and as perpetual witnesses to the cardinal facts of the Christian faith. Baptism in water is by immersion, which is a direct commandment of our Lord, and is for believers only. The ordinance of baptism is a symbol of the Christian’s identification and union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. Water baptism is also an act of obedience and is towards a good conscience. (Matt. 28:19; Rom. 6:4; Col. 2:12; Acts 8:36-39; 1Pet.3: 21) Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper is the partaking of the emblems symbolic of the Saviour’s broken body and shed blood, in remembrance of His sacrificial death, until He comes. (1Cor 11:23-26).
RELATIONSHIPS: We believe in the principle of heterosexual relationships between a natural man and a natural woman within the confines of lawful matrimony. Adherence to this stated principle of sexual behaviour is an inherent requirement of membership of City Bible Church. (Rom 1:26,27; Eph5: 5).
SANCTIFICATION: We believe that the Bible teaches that without holiness no man can see the Lord. We believe in the doctrine of sanctification as a definite, yet progressive work of grace, commencing at the time of the new birth and continuing until the consummation of salvation at Christ’s return. (1 Pet. 1:14-16; 1 Thess. 3:12,13; 4:3-7; 5:23; Heb. 12:14; 1 Cor. 1:2; 6:11; Heb10: 10,14; Phil. 3:12-14; 2 Cor. 3:18; 1 Jh. 3:2,3; Rom. 6:11-14).
CHURCH DISCIPLINE: We believe the Leadership of the local church has authority from the scriptures to withdraw the membership of any member for serious, unrepentant misconduct or similar cause. Church discipline is administered in a spirit of meekness and confidentiality. The purpose of such discipline is the restoration of the one subject to the discipline and /or the purification of the Church. The steps of discipline are: one on one - private confrontation, private confrontation with witnesses, and finally if necessary exposure to the Church for judgement leading to restoration or separation. (Matt. 18:15-20; Rom. 16:17; 1 Cor. 5:2; 2; Cor. 2:6-8; Gal. 6:1; 1 Tim5: 20; 2 John 9-11)
The Church is open to any further truth, which the Holy Spirit may illuminate from the Scriptures.
